Dutch shipping giant, WEC Lines, is set to revolutionize the shipping industry with the introduction of a groundbreaking direct route connecting Agadir, Morocco, and the Port of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. Scheduled to kick off this month, this novel service aims to offer importers a fast and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional trucking and established shipping routes.

WEC representatives outlined the company's strategy, stating, "Our vessels will extend their Canary Islands routes to include stops in Agadir before returning to the UK with refrigerated Moroccan goods." In the initial phase, WEC plans to expand its existing fleet by incorporating 50 additional refrigerated containers, with further expansion on the horizon.

Roger Megann, WEC Lines UK Managing Director, emphasized the company's responsiveness to market needs, saying, "We identified a gap in the market for importers seeking sustainable and cost-effective alternatives for delivering fresh goods to the UK. With Morocco surpassing Spain as a primary tomato supplier, we anticipate a surge in demand for this new route."

Surveys within the industry reveal a strong inclination among UK retailers toward direct shipping routes. Peel Ports reported that over 75% of retail leaders surveyed last year expressed a preference for importing goods through ports closer to their final destinations.

WEC Lines is strategically positioned to meet this demand, as its Agadir-Liverpool route marks the inception of the first European shipping service of its kind. Early signs suggest a significant appetite for greener and more economical solutions in response to current supply chain challenges.
