Morocco targets trade and tech growth ahead 2030 World Cup
Morocco is using preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup as a driver of economic transformation, aiming to attract investment, accelerate technology transfer, and expand industrial capacity. The strategy builds on growing international interest, with the United Kingdom emerging as a key partner in trade and business development.
Officials say the country is not focused only on increasing foreign investment volumes but on embedding long-term value within the domestic economy. The approach prioritizes skills development, industrial upgrading, and the creation of local technological capacity through partnerships with international firms operating in Morocco.
A recent business forum in Rabat brought together around 50 British companies, reflecting what authorities describe as a sharp rise in engagement compared with previous years. The discussions centered on infrastructure, innovation, and supply chain integration linked to World Cup-related projects. Morocco and the United Kingdom have also set a target to double bilateral trade within a few years, with officials suggesting current momentum could allow this goal to be reached in less than five years.
Trade between the two countries reached approximately £4.6 billion, or MAD 58.9 billion, in the year to mid-2025. This represents growth of nearly 19 percent year on year, driven by expanding exports of goods and services and deeper commercial cooperation across multiple sectors.
British officials highlighted the extent of integration already present in everyday supply chains, particularly in food products sourced from Morocco. They also pointed to additional opportunities in higher-value sectors, including professional services, creative industries, and advanced manufacturing, as both sides look to expand the scope of economic exchange.
Morocco’s broader strategy links sporting infrastructure investment with long-term economic positioning, aiming to turn World Cup preparations into a catalyst for sustained industrial and technological development beyond 2030.
