Arab Club Cup 2027: UAFA confirms return after three-year absence
The Arab Club Cup is set to return in 2027 after a three-year hiatus, with the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA) confirming plans to revive the regional club tournament next summer.
The competition is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 8, 2027, according to the UAFA following its latest ordinary meeting attended by members of its board, including first vice-president Hany Abu Rida.
The announcement marks the return of a tournament that last brought together leading Arab clubs in Saudi Arabia in 2023. That edition was held under the name King Salman Club Cup, combining a regional sporting event with a high-profile international club calendar.
Egypt emerges as a potential host
Egypt could play a central role in the competition's comeback. UAFA Secretary General Jarallah Al-Salmi said discussions are underway with Egyptian authorities over the possibility of hosting the 2027 tournament.
The prospect would give Egypt an opportunity to stage another major Arab football event while providing the competition with established sporting infrastructure and experience in organizing international tournaments. However, no final hosting decision has been announced at this stage.
Abu Rida, who also heads the Egyptian Football Association, described the UAFA meeting as productive. Discussions covered several competitions planned by the regional governing body, with the future of the Arab Club Cup among the issues addressed.
A crowded calendar poses a major hurdle
While the tournament's return has been formally scheduled, fitting it into the international football calendar remains one of the main challenges facing the organizers.
Abu Rida pointed to the increasingly congested timetable affecting both national teams and clubs. Continental competitions, international fixtures and domestic commitments leave limited room for a major regional tournament without creating scheduling conflicts.
The Egyptian official said the UAFA is therefore examining ways to coordinate its competitions with the wider football calendar and the dates established in cooperation with FIFA.
The issue is particularly significant for clubs whose players may simultaneously be involved in international competitions. A summer tournament lasting nearly three weeks could require careful planning to avoid clashes with other major events and to ensure that participating teams can field competitive squads.
A comeback dependent on coordination
The planned 2027 edition represents an important step toward restoring the Arab Club Cup to the regional football calendar. Yet the final shape of the tournament will depend not only on the choice of host but also on how successfully UAFA coordinates its dates with continental and international football authorities.
For now, the July 21-August 8, 2027 window provides a framework for the competition's return. The coming months are expected to clarify the host arrangements and the operational formula that will allow the tournament to coexist with an increasingly demanding global football schedule.
