Škoda recalls 1.7 million vehicles worldwide over steering failure risk
Škoda is recalling around 1.7 million vehicles worldwide over a potential defect in the steering system that could, in some circumstances, lead to a loss of steering control.
According to information recorded by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), around 370,000 vehicles in Germany are potentially affected. The issue involves a fastening screw in the steering system that could break, particularly after corrosion, creating a risk to vehicle safety.
As part of the corrective action, the affected screw will be replaced with a corrosion-resistant component. The recall covers the Škoda Kodiaq, Karoq, Octavia and Superb models, with vehicles produced between November 2015 and August 2026 included in the campaign.
Škoda’s recall follows similar actions involving other Volkswagen Group brands, including Volkswagen, Audi and SEAT. The group previously said internal quality checks had identified a potential steering problem affecting certain vehicles across several model ranges.
Volkswagen has described the broader recall as a precautionary measure. The replacement of the affected component is expected to be a relatively short workshop procedure, while the company has not disclosed the overall cost of the campaign.
The latest recall highlights the importance of corrosion resistance in steering components, where a failure could affect a vehicle’s ability to be controlled safely. Owners of potentially affected vehicles are expected to be contacted through the relevant recall procedures and should follow instructions from the manufacturer or local authorities.
