Gulf states reaffirm support for Morocco’s Sahara position at UN
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s position on the Moroccan Sahara and for the autonomy initiative proposed by Rabat as a framework for settling the regional dispute.
Speaking on behalf of the GCC before the United Nations Fourth Committee in New York, Bahrain reiterated the bloc’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and welcomed Security Council Resolution 2797.
The Bahraini representative described the Moroccan autonomy initiative as an important basis for efforts to reach a realistic, practical and lasting political settlement to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The GCC also reaffirmed its support for the UN-led political process and efforts by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara to facilitate negotiations between the parties concerned.
The latest statement reflects the Gulf bloc’s continued diplomatic backing for Morocco’s position on the Moroccan Sahara. GCC member states have repeatedly expressed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and for a political solution under UN auspices.
The issue remains on the agenda of the United Nations, with diplomatic efforts continuing to seek a political settlement that is acceptable to the parties involved and consistent with the UN framework.
