Spain floods: 102-year-old woman dies as torrential rain causes widespread disruption
A 102-year-old woman has died after torrential rain triggered severe flooding in southeastern Spain, with several regions facing disrupted transport, inundated streets and emergency rescues.
The woman was found dead inside her home in Madrigueras, a municipality of around 4,000 people in Castilla-La Mancha. Regional authorities said floodwaters had risen to roughly one metre inside the property.
The extreme rainfall began on Friday afternoon, delivering at least 140 litres of water per square metre within a few hours. Streets were rapidly overwhelmed, with floodwaters sweeping away vehicles and entering several buildings.
The local health centre was among the facilities affected. Red Cross personnel were deployed to assist residents and support those impacted by the flooding.
Valencia records hundreds of weather-related incidents
The storm system also caused significant disruption in the Valencian Community. In Alzira, rainfall reached 143 litres per square metre over four hours, with almost 97 litres recorded in a single hour.
The intense downpour temporarily overwhelmed drainage networks, leaving several streets underwater and creating difficult conditions for residents and emergency responders.
According to the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Valencian Community, authorities recorded 237 weather-related incidents across the region between Thursday morning and midnight on Saturday.
The incidents underline the scale of the disruption as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of eastern Spain.
Rescue operations intensify in Tarragona
Further north, authorities remained on alert in Catalonia, particularly across the Terres de l’Ebre. The regional meteorological service, Meteocat, warned of the possibility of additional intense rainfall in the coming hours.
In Tarragona province, firefighters rescued around 20 people who had become trapped inside their vehicles as flood conditions deteriorated.
Road connections have also been affected. Traffic remained suspended on the C-12 between Amposta and Tortosa, highlighting the continuing impact on mobility in the area.
Meteocat maintained a high-risk warning for the Montsià and Baix Ebre comarques, while forecasting that intense rainfall could extend to other parts of Catalonia's coastal and pre-coastal areas.
Emergency services remain on alert
The succession of flooding incidents across Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community and Catalonia has placed emergency services under sustained pressure.
Authorities are continuing to monitor rainfall levels, drainage capacity and road conditions as further storms are expected in some areas. Residents in the most exposed locations have been urged to remain attentive to official warnings as emergency teams respond to flooding and transport disruptions.
The death in Madrigueras is the most serious reported consequence of the flooding described by regional authorities, while rescue operations and infrastructure disruptions continue elsewhere in eastern Spain.
