The vibrant streets of Kampala set the stage for the commencement of the 3rd South Summit this past Sunday. Attended by representatives from more than 130 member states of the Group of 77 (G77) and China, the summit serves as a nexus for developing nations to bolster South-South cooperation on critical issues such as trade, investment, sustainable growth, and responses to climate change.

Among the distinguished delegates present was a team from Morocco, spearheaded by UN Ambassador Omar Hilale. The opening ceremonies were marked by the formal transfer of the summit presidency from Qatar to the host nation, Uganda.

The speeches delivered during this transition underscored the importance of strengthened unity among participating nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that while progress has been made in South-South cooperation, a heightened commitment from developed states is essential to propel global growth and stability.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in his address, not only echoed the call for increased commitment but also urged developing states to unite their voices in seeking greater international support to address the pressing challenges of poverty and environmental threats. With collaboration at its core, the summit, spanning the next two days, aims to invigorate joint efforts among the G77 member countries.
