Seventy-five percent discounts on flights are now available for many residents of Spain's islands, a benefit that significantly eases the financial burden of travel for those living in the Canary and Balearic Islands, as well as Ceuta and Melilla. This initiative is designed to alleviate the high costs associated with flying to the mainland, particularly during peak travel seasons.

For residents of these territories, flights to cities like Madrid and Barcelona can often be more expensive than international trips to destinations such as the UK. The discount, known as the "descuento de residente de islas," was first introduced in 1994 for the Canary Islands and expanded to the Balearics in 1997. Recently, Spain's Congress of Deputies has allocated an additional €319 million to support this rebate system, indicating its ongoing importance to island residents.

How the discount works

To take advantage of this substantial discount, certain criteria must be met. The 75% resident subsidy applies to:

- Residents registered on the padrón (town hall registration) in the Balearic or Canary Islands traveling to any other part of Spain.

- Residents of Ceuta flying to Seville, Málaga, or Jerez.

- Members of Parliament and the Senate from either archipelago or Ceuta on official business.

To qualify, passengers must obtain a residency travel certificate (certificado de viaje) from their local municipality, which must remain valid throughout their travel period. This document differs from the padrón registration, which is also essential for the discount process.

When booking, residency information must be provided, which will be verified by Spain's Ministry of Public Works and Transport. If pre-validation occurs prior to booking, passengers will not need to present their residency certificate at the airport. However, if the validation does not occur, they must bring their certificado de viaje along with their national identification or residency documents.

Requirements for different nationalities

The requirements vary slightly based on nationality:

- Spanish citizens: Must present a valid empadronamiento certificate and a national identity card or passport.

- Spanish citizens under 14 years of age without ID: A valid empadronamiento is sufficient.

- EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: Require a valid empadronamiento and a national identity card or passport from their country.

- Family members of EU citizens: Must provide a valid residence permit indicating their status.

- Non-EU citizens with long-term residency: Need a valid empadronamiento and a long-term residence permit. Those with temporary residency do not qualify for the discount.

It is crucial for non-residents to be aware that if any passengers in a booking are non-residents, they must book their flights separately, as they are not eligible for the discount.
