Iran challenges Qatar and Kuwait over detained personnel and missing pilots

Iran has stepped up pressure on two Gulf states over the fate of Iranian personnel whose status remains disputed, raising fresh questions about military incidents and detentions involving Tehran, Doha and Kuwait.

An Iranian military official on Sunday called on Qatar to grant access to an Iranian investigative delegation seeking information about pilots whom Tehran says were captured by Qatari forces. The demand comes as Qatar rejects the claim that it is holding any Iranian pilots and says its authorities recovered the remains of one airman following an incident involving Iranian aircraft in March.

Tehran seeks access to Qatar

Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of Iran’s Committee for the Search for Missing Persons within the Armed Forces General Staff, said an Iranian Air Force specialist and a fact-finding delegation had been waiting for months to travel to Qatar.

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Baqerzadeh accused Qatari authorities of repeatedly postponing efforts to clarify the pilots’ fate. He also urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene rapidly, reflecting Tehran’s growing concern over the unresolved case.

The dispute centers on an incident in which Iranian aircraft allegedly entered Qatari airspace in March. Qatar says its search-and-rescue personnel later located the remains of one pilot after attempts to establish contact with the aircraft went unanswered.

Doha has rejected allegations that it is detaining Iranian pilots. Qatari authorities say they contacted Iran to arrange the transfer of the recovered remains and offered Tehran an opportunity to examine information related to the search-and-rescue operation.

Qatar has also said that it received no response from Iranian authorities to those proposals.

A second dispute with Kuwait

Iran’s military official also raised a separate case involving four Iranians detained in Kuwait.

Tehran has previously said the four individuals were affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and had been carrying out a maritime patrol when a navigation problem led them into Kuwaiti territorial waters.

Kuwait has presented a sharply different account. Its authorities have said the four were suspected of preparing hostile activities against the country, turning what Iran describes as a navigation-related incident into a broader security dispute.

The competing explanations highlight the continuing sensitivity surrounding maritime borders and military activity in the Gulf, where relatively small incidents can quickly become diplomatic flashpoints.

Regional tensions remain high

The two cases illustrate the difficulties facing Iran in dealing with neighboring Gulf countries at a time of heightened regional security tensions.

For Tehran, gaining direct access to information about missing or detained personnel is now a central demand. Qatar, meanwhile, maintains that its authorities have already taken steps to communicate the findings of their search-and-rescue operation.

The involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross could provide a potential channel for clarifying the circumstances surrounding the missing pilots and establishing the status of the individuals involved. Any such process would depend on cooperation between the governments concerned.

For now, the conflicting accounts from Iran, Qatar and Kuwait leave key questions unresolved, including the precise circumstances of the March air incident, the identity and status of the personnel involved, and the conditions under which the four Iranians entered Kuwaiti waters.

The cases add another layer to the complex security environment linking Iran with the Gulf states, where military operations, territorial boundaries and diplomatic relations remain closely intertwined.
