Belgium seeks fines against Ryanair over alleged commercial practices non-compliance
Ryanair is facing renewed legal pressure in Belgium, where a consumer protection group is seeking financial penalties over what it alleges is the airline’s incomplete compliance with a court ruling concerning its commercial practices and booking process.
The Belgian consumer association Testachats has asked a court to impose daily fines on the Irish low-cost carrier, arguing that Ryanair has not fully implemented a judgment issued in January 2026 targeting aspects of its online pricing and booking presentation.
At the heart of the dispute are allegations that certain elements of Ryanair’s reservation system remain unclear or potentially misleading. Testachats has pointed to bundled pricing formats, promotional offers based on contested reference prices, and urgency-driven messages such as “only a few seats left at this price,” which it says may not always reflect real availability.
The association is reportedly seeking penalties of around €5,000 per infringement per day, escalating pressure on the airline to make further adjustments to its booking interface.
According to Testachats, the original court ruling focused primarily on transparency in fare presentation rather than the legality of Ryanair’s low-cost business model itself. The case therefore concerns how prices are displayed to consumers rather than the existence of additional fees or the structure of the airline’s product offering.
Ryanair, for its part, maintains that it has already complied with parts of the ruling and that the judgment did not invalidate key elements of its pricing policy. The airline has previously indicated that it would adapt certain aspects of its website following the court decision, while defending its broader commercial approach as lawful within EU aviation rules.
The dispute comes amid heightened scrutiny of airline pricing practices across Europe, where regulators and consumer groups have increasingly challenged add-on fees, fare transparency and online booking design. Similar cases in other EU jurisdictions have recently placed low-cost carriers under pressure to adjust how optional services and promotional fares are presented.
If the Belgian court grants the requested astreintes, Ryanair could face ongoing financial penalties until it fully complies with the ruling, potentially setting a precedent for stricter enforcement of consumer transparency standards in the aviation sector.
