French senators call for inquiry after tax administration data breach

French Socialist senators are calling for a parliamentary inquiry into a major data breach affecting the country’s tax administration, after authorities confirmed that hundreds of thousands of individuals and businesses had been exposed to unauthorized access.

The request comes as lawmakers seek a broader assessment of cybersecurity incidents affecting public institutions in France in 2026 and question whether the latest breach should be examined as part of a wider pattern.

Socialist senators seek parliamentary investigation

Patrick Kanner, president of the Socialist group in the Senate, formally asked Senate president Gérard Larcher to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the incident.

In a letter dated August 15 and obtained by AFP, Kanner argued that a series of security incidents since the beginning of the year warranted a comprehensive review by Parliament.

The proposed investigation would not focus solely on the latest breach. According to Kanner’s request, lawmakers should be able to examine the succession of incidents affecting public systems and assess the broader implications for the protection of sensitive information held by the French state.

The initiative puts the security of government databases firmly on the political agenda at a time when cyber threats are increasingly targeting public institutions.

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers affected

France’s tax administration confirmed on Friday that its systems had been compromised.

According to the Directorate General of Public Finances, known as the DGFiP, at least 678,000 individuals and professionals were affected by unauthorized access to data stored by the administration.

The scale of the incident has heightened concerns about the potential consequences for people whose personal or professional information is held by the tax authorities.

While the administration has acknowledged the intrusion and identified the number of affected users, the political response is now shifting toward questions about the circumstances surrounding the breach and the wider resilience of France’s public-sector digital infrastructure.

A broader cybersecurity debate

The Socialist senators’ initiative reflects growing pressure for Parliament to examine cybersecurity beyond individual incidents.

The proposed commission would provide lawmakers with an opportunity to establish a broader picture of vulnerabilities within public institutions and to assess whether existing security measures are sufficient to protect sensitive databases.

For the French authorities, the immediate challenge is to determine the full scope of the tax breach and ensure that affected individuals and professionals are adequately informed. For lawmakers, the incident raises a wider question: whether repeated cyber incidents should prompt a more systematic review of the state’s digital defenses.

The request for a parliamentary inquiry will now depend on the Senate’s institutional process and the response of its leadership.
