Four Antonello da Messina artworks stolen from museum in Sicily

Four Antonello da Messina artworks stolen from museum in Sicily

Four artworks described by Italy’s Ministry of Culture as being of exceptional value have been stolen from a museum in Messina, the Sicilian city where Renaissance master Antonello da Messina was born.

The theft took place on Saturday evening and targeted works by one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance. Italian authorities have launched an investigation as the disappearance raises fresh concerns over the protection of the country’s vast artistic heritage.

Three panels from a 15th-century masterpiece

Among the stolen works are three panels belonging to the St Gregory Polyptych, a 15th-century work associated with Antonello da Messina.

The disappearance is particularly significant because of the artist’s historical connection with Messina. Antonello, who lived during the 15th century, is regarded as a key figure in the development of Renaissance painting in Italy and is known for combining Italian artistic traditions with techniques associated with northern European painting.

The fourth stolen work has not been identified in the information released by the Italian authorities.

The Ministry of Culture described all four pieces as being of exceptional value, underscoring the cultural importance of the loss beyond their potential financial worth.

Theft comes months after major Antonello acquisition

The incident comes only months after the Italian state made headlines with the acquisition of another work by the Sicilian master.

Italy purchased Antonello da Messina’s Ecce Homo at an auction in New York for almost $15 million, equivalent to around €13 million. The acquisition highlighted renewed international interest in the painter’s limited and highly prized body of work.

The theft in Messina consequently places Antonello’s works back in the spotlight, this time through a major breach affecting a collection in his native city.

Mayor condemns theft during religious celebrations

Messina mayor Federico Basile strongly condemned the incident, calling it deeply reprehensible. He also expressed particular dismay that the theft occurred during the city’s traditional celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The timing is likely to add to the sense of shock locally, with the disappearance occurring during one of Messina’s major periods of public celebration.

Italy has long faced persistent threats to its artistic heritage, with museums, churches, private collections and archaeological sites all potentially targeted by art thieves.

Another recent museum theft raises concern

The latest case follows a separate investigation that recently ended with the recovery of three paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse.

Italian police announced two days before the Antonello theft that the three works, collectively valued at more than €9 million, had been recovered. They had allegedly been stolen in March from a museum near Parma in northern Italy.

Authorities suspected a gang of Moldovan origin in that case.

The two incidents underline the continuing challenge faced by Italian authorities in protecting works of exceptional cultural and financial value, particularly in a country whose museums and historic sites hold an extraordinary concentration of European art.
