Lightning strike sets fire to church steeple in Aveyron village
A lightning strike triggered a fire at the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church in Saint-Salvadou, Aveyron, on Saturday evening, severely damaging the upper section of the Neo-Gothic building and causing its steeple to collapse.
The incident occurred as powerful thunderstorms swept across the area on August 15. The full extent of the damage to the historic church has yet to be established.
Fire breaks out during severe thunderstorms
The lightning strike hit the church’s steeple at around 9 p.m., according to Jean-Luc Farjou, the village’s delegated mayor. Saint-Salvadou is located near Villefranche-de-Rouergue in western Aveyron and is part of the municipality of Bas Ségala.
The impact was followed almost immediately by a fire in the upper part of the structure.
Images shared on social media by the MeteoAveyron page showed flames rising from the top of the church as the storm passed over the village.
Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further through the building.
Steeple collapses after fire
Firefighters remained at the site for several hours and left at around 2 a.m., after bringing the fire under control.
Despite their intervention, the uppermost section of the steeple suffered major damage. The spire eventually collapsed, leaving the church with significant structural damage at its highest point.
“The spire fell,” Farjou said, describing the immediate consequences of the fire.
The collapse also means that specialists will need to assess the stability and condition of the remaining structure before the extent of the damage can be fully determined.
Assessment of the church still pending
The damage to the rest of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church has not yet been precisely assessed.
For the village, the incident has struck a notable local landmark at a time when much of the region was experiencing intense storm activity.
The coming assessment will determine whether the damage is confined primarily to the steeple or whether the lightning strike and subsequent fire affected other parts of the Neo-Gothic building.
Authorities and local officials will now have to evaluate the structure and consider what measures are required to secure the site and protect the church from further deterioration.
