French Prime Minister to chair crisis meeting over tax administration cyberattack
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will chair an interministerial crisis meeting on Monday following a major cyberattack on the country’s tax administration that exposed data belonging to at least 678,000 individuals and professionals.
The announcement comes after France’s tax authorities acknowledged an intrusion into their computer systems on Friday, raising concerns over the security of sensitive information held by the state.
Government prepares emergency response
The crisis meeting will take place at Matignon, the headquarters of the French prime minister, as the government seeks to assess the scale of the breach and coordinate its response.
The intrusion has affected at least 678,000 individuals and professionals, according to the Directorate General of Public Finances. The compromised information has reportedly subsequently appeared for sale online, adding to concerns about the potential consequences for those affected.
The government is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the data involved and the measures required to limit further risks.
Political pressure grows
The cyberattack has also triggered calls for greater parliamentary scrutiny.
Socialist senators have asked Senate President Gérard Larcher to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the breach. The request comes amid broader concerns about a series of cybersecurity incidents affecting French institutions since the beginning of 2026.
Lawmakers argue that examining the tax administration incident in isolation may not be sufficient to understand the wider vulnerabilities facing France’s public digital infrastructure.
Focus on protection of sensitive data
The scale of the breach places renewed attention on the ability of French government agencies to protect large databases containing personal and professional information.
Monday’s meeting is expected to bring together the relevant government services and ministries to assess the response and determine what additional security measures may be required.
For the government, the immediate priority will be to establish the full extent of the intrusion while limiting the potential impact on the hundreds of thousands of people whose information was affected.
The crisis meeting will also take place as political pressure builds for a broader examination of cybersecurity within the French public sector.
