Romania says Spanish NATO fighter shot down drone near Ukrainian border

Romania has reported that a Spanish fighter jet operating as part of NATO’s air policing mission shot down a drone after it entered Romanian airspace near the country’s borders with Ukraine and Moldova.

The incident occurred early Sunday and prompted a military response in a sensitive area close to the war in Ukraine. Romanian authorities said the drone was intercepted after entering national airspace from the direction of Moldova.

Spanish F-18 carries out interception

According to Romania’s Defense Ministry, the Spanish aircraft involved was an F-18 fighter assigned to NATO operations in Romania.

The interception took place at 5:01 a.m. local time, or 2:01 a.m. GMT, the ministry said.

The episode highlights the role of NATO’s air surveillance and rapid-response capabilities along the alliance’s eastern flank, where Romanian territory lies close to the conflict zone in neighboring Ukraine.

Romania has strengthened its air-defense posture in recent years as Russian military activity in the wider Black Sea and Ukrainian border region has repeatedly raised concerns among NATO members.

Possible debris reported in Galati region

Romanian authorities also warned that fragments from the destroyed drone may have fallen in an uninhabited area of Galati County, close to the Ukrainian border.

The location of the suspected debris means that investigators will have to establish precisely what type of drone was involved, where it entered Romanian airspace and whether any additional security measures are required.

No casualties were reported in the initial account of the incident.

Growing pressure on NATO’s eastern flank

The episode comes as NATO countries bordering Ukraine remain on heightened alert over potential violations of their airspace.

Romania has previously dealt with incidents involving drones and debris connected to the war in Ukraine, making airspace monitoring a continuing security priority.

The participation of a Spanish fighter under NATO’s mission also underscores the multinational character of the alliance's defensive presence in Romania. Aircraft and personnel from different member states contribute to surveillance and air policing operations intended to detect and respond to potential threats.

For Bucharest and its NATO partners, the latest interception is another reminder that military activity associated with the war in Ukraine can have direct security implications beyond the battlefield.
