Moscow targeted by 600 drones as Russia and Ukraine exchange deadly strikes

Moscow targeted by 600 drones as Russia and Ukraine exchange deadly strikes

Moscow came under an unusually large-scale drone assault overnight, according to Russian authorities, as Russia and Ukraine exchanged another wave of attacks that left at least six people dead across the two countries.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said approximately 600 drones had been identified as heading toward the Russian capital during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Russian air defenses intercepted 201 of them in the Moscow region, according to the mayor.

At least three people were injured in the attacks targeting the capital, authorities said.

Moscow faces one of its largest drone attacks

The reported scale of the assault marks a significant escalation in the pressure being placed on Moscow, which lies hundreds of kilometers from the main front lines of the war.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the capital has generally experienced fewer attacks than areas closer to the Ukrainian border. That pattern has increasingly changed as Kyiv has expanded its use of long-range drones against targets inside Russian territory.

The latest attack demonstrates the growing reach of Ukraine’s aerial campaign and its ability to disrupt areas far from the battlefield.

Deadly strikes reported in Russia and Ukraine

The overnight exchanges were not limited to Moscow.

Russian authorities reported three deaths in the Rostov region in southwestern Russia. Ukraine also reported three fatalities, including two people in the Zaporizhzhia region and another in Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine.

The figures illustrate the continuing human cost of the conflict as both sides intensify attacks against targets well beyond the immediate front line.

Russia increases air-defense efforts around capital

The large number of drones reportedly directed toward Moscow has placed renewed attention on Russia’s air-defense network surrounding the capital.

The interception of 201 drones in the Moscow region, according to Sobyanin, indicates the scale of the defensive operation required to protect the city during the overnight assault.

Authorities also faced the challenge of managing the consequences of intercepted or destroyed drones, including possible damage and disruption caused by falling debris.

Long-range warfare expands beyond the battlefield

Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone operations to strike military, industrial and logistical targets inside Russia. Moscow has become an increasingly visible component of that strategy despite its distance from the front.

For Russia, repeated attacks on the capital represent both a security challenge and a politically sensitive development. For Ukraine, long-range strikes provide a means of applying pressure on Russian territory while the wider war remains largely concentrated along the front.

The latest exchange therefore highlights a broader transformation of the conflict: the geographical boundaries of the war are increasingly difficult to define, with drones allowing attacks to reach cities and regions far removed from active ground combat.
