Zimbabwe boat accident death toll rises to 80 after Lake Kariba search

The death toll from a boat accident on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to 80 after rescue teams recovered eight additional bodies, according to the country’s national police service.

The passenger vessel capsized on August 11, triggering a large-scale search and recovery operation on one of Africa’s largest artificial lakes.

Eight more bodies recovered

Zimbabwean police announced on Sunday that eight additional bodies had been found during ongoing recovery efforts, bringing the confirmed death toll to 80.

Search teams have continued working in the area around the overturned vessel, with local boat operators assisting rescue personnel in the operation.

The accident occurred on Lake Kariba, a vast reservoir shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia and an important transport and economic area for communities along its shores.

Search and recovery operation continues

The latest recovery efforts come several days after the vessel capsized, with emergency personnel continuing to search the waters and surrounding areas for victims.

Images from the operation show rescue workers and local boat operators working near the overturned passenger ferry in Kariba, reflecting the scale of the response following the disaster.

The discovery of the additional bodies has significantly increased the confirmed toll, while authorities continue efforts to establish the full circumstances of the accident.

A major tragedy on Lake Kariba

The incident has become one of the most serious recent maritime disasters in Zimbabwe, with the rising death toll highlighting the risks associated with passenger transport on the lake.

As the search continues, authorities are expected to focus on both recovering those still missing and determining what caused the vessel to capsize.

Further details about the victims, the number of people aboard and the precise circumstances surrounding the accident were not immediately available in the latest police update.
