Colombia seeks temporary US tariff relief after devastating earthquake

Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella has called on US President Donald Trump to temporarily ease tariffs on Colombian goods as the country confronts the economic consequences of a devastating earthquake.

The request comes as Colombian authorities assess the damage caused by the disaster and seek measures that could help businesses withstand the shock. De la Espriella appealed directly to Trump on Saturday, arguing that a temporary reduction in trade barriers could provide immediate support to companies affected by the catastrophe.

Tariffs become part of Colombia's recovery effort

The Colombian government's appeal concerns US duties that were increased from 10% to 12.5% at the end of July. Bogotá is now seeking a temporary suspension of the higher charges, presenting the measure as an emergency economic response rather than a broader challenge to the existing trade relationship.

For Colombian exporters, lower tariffs could provide some breathing room at a time when companies are already facing the disruption caused by the earthquake. The proposal would also place trade policy at the centre of the country's wider recovery strategy.

The request highlights the close economic and political relationship between Colombia and the United States. Rather than seeking a permanent change to tariff policy, Bogotá is asking Washington to introduce temporary flexibility while the country deals with the consequences of the disaster.

A disaster with consequences beyond the immediate damage

The earthquake has generated a major humanitarian response in Colombia, with rescue operations drawing international attention. The disaster has also raised concerns about the ability of businesses and local economies to absorb additional pressure during the recovery period.

For the government, the tariff issue therefore has a practical dimension: reducing the cost of access to the US market could help Colombian companies maintain activity and protect revenues while reconstruction efforts continue.

The appeal to Trump comes at a moment when the two countries are seeking to manage their economic relationship while responding to a rapidly changing situation on the ground.

An appeal for temporary support

De la Espriella's proposal places Washington's trade policy in the context of an exceptional national emergency. A temporary suspension would give Colombian exporters an opportunity to cope with the immediate economic fallout without necessarily altering the longer-term framework governing bilateral trade.

The response from the Trump administration could therefore become an important test of the degree of economic support Washington is prepared to offer its Colombian partner following the earthquake.

For Bogotá, the priority is clear: obtain additional room for businesses to operate while the country turns its attention to recovery.
