Talyia Hosny calls for unity to combat online harassment

In a digital age where social platforms can both unite and harm, the rising tide of online harassment demands urgent attention. Talyia Hosny, a rising influencer and daughter of Egyptian singer Tamer Hosny, has broken the silence on this issue through an emotional Instagram reel. Her heartfelt message highlights the devastating effects of bullying, particularly in its digital form, and calls for collective action to foster a culture of kindness and accountability.

A plea for awareness and compassion

Talyia Hosny’s video carries a powerful message: “Bullying has become normalized, but it is anything but normal.” She candidly acknowledges that, while she has not been personally affected, witnessing the pain of others has moved her to speak out. “Some people take their own lives because of bullying, and that is far from okay. Those responsible will answer for their actions.”

She stresses that harassment goes beyond visible bruises. Whether verbal, physical, or online, its scars often remain invisible but profoundly harmful. "Hate comments, rumors, and the sharing of private information online can cause irreparable damage," she explains, urging her audience to recognize the seriousness of cyberbullying.

Her message is a call to action for her followers. She urges them not to remain passive: “Don’t laugh when you see acts of bullying, as your laughter can hurt more than the bully’s words. Social media should not spread hate but promote sharing and kindness.”

A global crisis with dire consequences

Talyia’s words reflect a broader, global issue. According to UNESCO, one in three adolescents worldwide experiences bullying, with the rise of social media intensifying the problem. Cyberbullying has become a particularly pervasive form of harassment, with anonymous attacks, hateful comments, and campaigns of defamation leaving lasting psychological effects.

The consequences are often devastating for victims, ranging from isolation and loss of self-esteem to severe anxiety and depression. In the most tragic cases, harassment has led to suicide. UNICEF reports that one in five children subjected to cyberbullying has considered ending their life.

A universal problem requiring urgent action

Cyberharassment transcends borders, targeting individuals regardless of age, status, or background. In Morocco, cases of cyberviolence have surged by 35% between 2023 and 2024, with women and young individuals being the primary victims. Nearly 70% of Moroccan teenage girls report having faced some form of online abuse in 2025.

Elsewhere, the statistics are equally alarming. In Europe, 44% of young people have encountered harassment on social media, often from anonymous perpetrators. These figures underline the urgent need for stronger regulation of digital platforms to address this growing threat.

A call for collective responsibility

Talyia Hosny’s message goes beyond raising awareness. She emphasizes the power of collective action: “True strength lies in standing up against bullies. Be the person who supports, not the one who destroys.” Her call aligns with global movements like #IMAGAINSTBULLYING, which encourage individuals to report abuse and protect victims.

Governments are also stepping up with tougher laws. In Morocco, law 103.13 imposes penalties of up to three years in prison for perpetrators of cyberviolence. However, Talyia believes that legal measures must be complemented by education on empathy and respect, starting from an early age.

Transforming social media into a force for good

While often criticized for amplifying harassment, social media platforms can also be tools for change. Influencers like Talyia Hosny use their reach to spread positivity and compassion. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have introduced moderation tools to report harmful content and reduce toxic interactions, but these efforts require widespread user participation to succeed.

Building a future of respect and empathy

Talyia Hosny’s heartfelt appeal is a universal reminder that everyone can contribute to eradicating bullying, both online and offline. By fostering empathy, reporting abusive behavior, and supporting victims, society can create a space where respect triumphs over hate.

“One word can hurt for years,” she warns. But that same word can also inspire hope. The choice to uplift, protect, and unite lies in everyone’s hands.
