Study warns that hundreds of AI-powered iOS apps may expose user data
A recent academic study has raised concerns about the security of artificial intelligence applications available on Apple's App Store, warning that hundreds of AI-powered iOS apps may expose sensitive user information.
Researchers from Wake Forest University examined 444 iOS applications that incorporate large language model (LLM) technologies and found that a significant number contained weaknesses related to credentials, internal access controls, or data protection mechanisms.
The findings come at a time when artificial intelligence applications are experiencing unprecedented growth. Industry reports indicate that AI-powered apps have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the mobile software market, attracting billions of downloads worldwide and expanding into nearly every category of digital services.
According to the researchers, the security concerns are not limited to a single type of application. Vulnerabilities were identified across a wide range of categories, including writing assistants, productivity tools, entertainment platforms, lifestyle applications, and health and fitness services.
Productivity applications were found to be among the most vulnerable groups, while health and fitness apps recorded some of the highest rates of potential data exposure. Experts warn that such weaknesses could allow sensitive information to be accessed or leaked if adequate security measures are not implemented.
The study suggests that personal details such as names, email addresses, and conversation histories could be at risk in certain cases. As AI applications increasingly process large volumes of personal data, ensuring strong privacy protections has become a major challenge for developers and platform operators.
Researchers involved in the Firehound initiative reported that nearly 200 applications displayed some form of user data exposure, with most of them presenting serious security risks that could affect user privacy.
Cybersecurity specialists emphasize that the findings highlight the importance of regular security audits, stronger encryption standards, and stricter access controls. They also encourage users to review app permissions carefully and download applications only from trusted developers.
