Senegal bans mobile phones in schools
The Senegalese government has announced a nationwide ban on the use of mobile phones in all public and private schools starting next academic year. Authorities argue that uncontrolled phone use undermines the essential mission of schools.
In a statement released Monday, the Ministry of Education explained that the measure aims to protect “the best interest of the student and of the Republic.” It noted that unregulated mobile phone usage can distract students from learning, reduce concentration, and expose them to practices contrary to educational values.
The ban does not apply to digital learning tools such as tablets, computers, or e-readers, which can be used under teacher supervision in line with the national digital education strategy. Each school will have the autonomy to define its own policy for storing phones upon entry.
Strictly regulated exceptions will be allowed, for instance for students with disabilities or medical conditions requiring connected devices. Teachers may also permit mobile phone use for specific educational activities, particularly in lessons integrating artificial intelligence tools.
To ensure compliance, the Ministry stated that sanctions will be clear, graduated, and proportionate. They will be developed in consultation with school management councils, parent associations, and the broader educational community, and integrated into school regulations to guarantee uniform application nationwide.
