Moroccan and Senegalese leaders bolster bilateral cooperation

The Moroccan Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, met with Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in Rabat on January 26, 2026, to discuss strengthening ties between the two nations. The meeting coincided with the 15th session of the Morocco-Senegal Joint Cooperation Commission, part of a working visit by the Senegalese leader. Key officials, including Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Moroccan Ambassador to Dakar, also attended the talks.

During the discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting the shared vision of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. They emphasized the enduring spirit of fraternity, solidarity, and mutual respect that defines relations between Morocco and Senegal, recognizing the significant contributions of the Senegalese community in Morocco and the Moroccan community in Senegal to fostering this unique partnership.

Highlighting the historical and strategic ties between the two countries, Akhannouch noted eight royal visits by King Mohammed VI to Senegal and underscored Senegal's pivotal role in pan-African initiatives championed by Morocco. This includes the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic Africa region, aimed at enhancing access for Sahel states to the Atlantic Ocean.

The meeting also celebrated progress in bilateral relations, including increased ministerial exchanges, legal frameworks supporting cooperation, and economic investments under President Faye's leadership. The 15th Joint Commission provides a platform for further collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, trade, and digital economy, with a focus on implementing structural projects to benefit both nations.
