Sap joins Smart Africa alliance to expand AI and data integration
SAP has joined the Smart Africa alliance in a move to accelerate digital transformation across the continent. The agreement was announced during a signing ceremony at GITEX Africa 2026 in Marrakech.
The partnership places the global software company within a network that includes more than 40 African countries, along with international institutions and private sector partners working toward a unified digital market by 2030.
Created in 2013, Smart Africa serves as a coordination platform for digital integration across the continent. Under the new agreement, SAP will support priorities such as data governance, digital maturity, and the deployment of artificial intelligence in public and private sector projects.
Smart Africa chief executive Lacina Koné said the partnership marks a new phase focused on faster execution, stronger governance frameworks, and wider adoption of AI-driven systems.
SAP said the deal aligns with its strategy to expand artificial intelligence capabilities in Africa. The company aims to link global cloud technologies with local systems so institutions can develop their own digital capacity and reduce reliance on external frameworks.
The collaboration will focus on integrating enterprise applications, data systems, and AI tools to improve operational efficiency. SAP said these tools will help organizations anticipate disruptions, strengthen resilience, and accelerate decision-making, particularly in supply chain management where data reliability remains critical.
The company also plans to target sectors central to economic development, including healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Its solutions will emphasize traceability, operational visibility, and modern management systems supported by data-driven processes.
SAP is also expanding its training efforts through its Young Professionals Program in Francophone Africa. The initiative provides training in business processes, SAP certification, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, with the aim of building a skilled workforce to support digital transformation.
SAP Francophone Africa managing director Hicham Iraqi Houssaini said the initiative reflects a collaborative approach involving both public and private stakeholders.
GITEX Africa 2026 highlighted Morocco’s ambition to position itself as a hub for digital integration across the continent. The event featured announcements on artificial intelligence partnerships, private 5G networks, cross-border data governance, and startup investment initiatives.
