TotalEnergies to cover French firefighters’ fuel costs during peak wildfire season
TotalEnergies has announced an initiative to offset fuel expenses for French firefighting and civil protection services as the country confronts one of its most demanding wildfire seasons in recent years.
The French energy company said it will cover the cost of both ground and aviation fuel used by firefighting teams across metropolitan France during July and August, a period marked by intense wildfire activity and unprecedented emergency deployments.
Rather than making direct cash payments, TotalEnergies will issue fuel credits equal to the expenses incurred by the country's departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS) and the Civil Security agency. These credits can be applied toward future fuel purchases from the company, providing financial relief while ensuring continued operational readiness.
The support initiative reflects the extraordinary pressure placed on emergency responders as large-scale wildfires have required significant human and logistical resources throughout the summer. Firefighting aircraft, emergency vehicles and rescue units have been operating at high capacity to contain blazes affecting multiple regions.
TotalEnergies stated that it will now work with the SDIS network and France's Civil Security authorities to finalize the practical arrangements for implementing the program. The company confirmed that the assistance covers fuel consumption recorded between July 1 and August 31.
The announcement expands TotalEnergies' recent efforts to provide targeted support during periods of national strain. By easing fuel costs for frontline emergency services, the company aims to reinforce France's wildfire response capabilities while helping public authorities manage the growing financial burden associated with increasingly severe fire seasons.
