Study Finds Social Media Shapes Youth Perceptions of Irregular Migration

A recent field study has highlighted the growing influence of social media on young people's perceptions of irregular migration, suggesting that digital platforms increasingly shape the belief that migration offers a realistic path to a better future. The findings come at a time when migration remains a major social issue, particularly among young people facing economic uncertainty and limited employment opportunities.

The research, conducted among young people in northern Morocco, found that a large majority of respondents view online content about migration as encouraging the idea that moving abroad can significantly improve living conditions. Stories of successful migrants, personal experiences shared on social media, and online communities dedicated to migration have contributed to strengthening this perception despite the well-documented risks associated with irregular journeys.

According to the study, many participants regularly follow social media pages and online groups that provide information, advice, or discussions related to migration. Visual content, particularly short videos and images, was found to have the greatest influence, attracting considerably more engagement than text-based posts. Researchers suggest that these formats play a significant role in shaping attitudes and aspirations among young audiences.

The report also indicates that success stories shared by migrants and content created by online influencers contribute to increasing interest in migration. At the same time, posts highlighting unemployment, social inequality, and limited economic opportunities reinforce the belief that leaving the country may offer better prospects.

Researchers noted that the impact of digital content appears to be similar across gender, educational backgrounds, and places of residence. However, economic conditions remain an important factor, with young people from more vulnerable households generally showing greater sensitivity to migration-related content.

The study emphasizes that social media is not the primary cause of irregular migration but acts as a powerful amplifier of existing social and economic challenges. Experts argue that addressing the issue requires more than security measures alone. Expanding employment opportunities, improving education and vocational training, strengthening social protection, and promoting digital and media literacy are considered essential steps to help young people make informed decisions while reducing the appeal of dangerous migration routes.
