Coal mine explosion in Pakistan kills 34 workers in Balochistan

At least 34 miners have died following an explosion inside a coal mine in Balochistan, southwestern Pakistan, according to provincial disaster management authorities.

Emergency teams recovered the victims after being deployed to the accident site, making the incident one of the deadliest mining disasters reported in the country in recent years.

Officials from the provincial disaster management authority confirmed that rescue operations resulted in the recovery of 34 bodies from the mine, while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Rescue teams complete recovery operation

Authorities said emergency responders were dispatched immediately after the blast was reported. Following hours of search and recovery efforts, rescue personnel confirmed that all known victims had been located.

No official information has yet been released regarding additional survivors or the possibility of missing workers, as investigators continue assessing conditions inside the mine.

The explosion occurred in Balochistan, a province that hosts much of Pakistan's mining industry but has long faced challenges related to infrastructure, occupational safety and emergency response.

Mining safety remains a persistent concern

Coal mining remains one of Pakistan's most hazardous industries, with workers frequently exposed to risks including methane gas explosions, tunnel collapses and inadequate ventilation.

Safety experts have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of mining regulations, improved inspection systems and greater investment in worker protection to reduce the number of fatal accidents.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including whether safety standards were properly implemented at the site.

The latest tragedy is likely to renew scrutiny of working conditions across Pakistan's mining sector and intensify calls for stronger safety oversight.
