Ceuta: Pedro Sánchez Responds to Massive Influx of Migrants from Morocco

The autonomous city of Ceuta is facing a dramatic increase in the arrival of migrants from Morocco, a situation that has led Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to visit the area to assess the consequences of this crisis. In light of the scale of the phenomenon, the head of the Spanish government condemned what he considers an infringement on the territorial integrity of his country, while reaffirming the State's support for local authorities.

The crossings of migrants, mainly consisting of young men and minors, continued throughout the night and were still ongoing on Friday, mobilizing significant surveillance and rescue resources.

Madrid Shows Support for Ceuta

During his visit to the Spanish enclave, Pedro Sánchez aimed to convey a message of solidarity to the residents as well as to the security forces deployed on the ground.

The Spanish leader emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working in coordination with the various relevant administrations to respond to this unprecedented migratory pressure.

According to estimates provided by Spanish authorities, approximately 40,000 migrants have reached Ceuta from Moroccan territory in recent hours.

Human Trafficking Networks Blamed

For the Spanish government, this wave of arrivals is partly linked to the dissemination of misleading information by networks specializing in migrant trafficking.

Pedro Sánchez believes that these criminal organizations have exploited a recent ruling made by the Spanish Supreme Court regarding the treatment of individuals arriving by sea.

According to him, this interpretation quickly circulated among potential migrants, encouraging a surge in attempts to cross the border.

The Prime Minister specified that this issue was also among the topics discussed with Moroccan authorities during bilateral exchanges.

A Strategic Border Facing a New Migratory Wave

Located on the northern coast of the African continent, Ceuta remains one of the main crossing points between Morocco and the European Union.

This geographical position makes it a particularly sensitive area, regularly confronted with challenges related to irregular migration movements.

Spanish authorities are currently continuing their operations to control and assist those who have arrived, while discussions with Moroccan partners are ongoing to ease the situation.
