Finland backs calls to suspend Spain from Schengen area over migration concerns

Finland has expressed support for Italy’s proposal to consider suspending Spain from the Schengen Area following a recent surge in irregular migration attempts toward the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The move adds to growing European debate over border management and the future of migration policies within the European Union.

Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said that Spain had failed to adequately protect the external borders of the Schengen zone, arguing that countries unable to meet their obligations in securing European borders should face political consequences. She called on other EU member states to support the initiative promoted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The Italian government had previously raised the possibility of restricting Spain’s participation in the Schengen system, describing the recent migration pressure in Ceuta as a serious challenge to the protection of Europe’s external borders. Rome has called for stronger European measures to control migration flows and improve coordination among member states.

The controversy follows a significant increase in attempts by migrants to enter Ceuta, with thousands of people reportedly trying to reach the Spanish territory through irregular routes. The Schengen Agreement allows temporary reintroduction of internal border controls under exceptional circumstances, including serious threats to public security or major migration pressures.
