Russia expels British diplomat over espionage allegations
Russia has announced the expulsion of a British diplomat, accusing him of involvement in intelligence activities, in the latest escalation of diplomatic tensions between Moscow and London.
According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities received information suggesting that a diplomatic employee at the British embassy was linked to the United Kingdom’s intelligence services. Following this assessment, the diplomat was declared persona non grata and given two weeks to leave Russian territory.
The British charge d’affaires in Moscow, Danae Dholakia, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where Russian officials lodged a formal protest and informed her of the decision. Russian authorities did not publicly disclose the identity of the expelled diplomat.
This move comes amid already strained relations between Russia and Western countries, marked by mutual accusations, sanctions, and expulsions of diplomatic personnel in recent years. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it will respond firmly to what it considers hostile actions by foreign governments.
The British government has not immediately commented on the expulsion, though similar incidents in the past have often prompted reciprocal measures.
