Putin reaffirms Russian demands and accuses the EU of failed ‘robbery’

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated that Moscow will not back down from its conditions for ending the conflict in Ukraine, asserting that the European Union’s attempts to seize Russian assets abroad have backfired. Speaking at a televised news conference, Putin accused Western governments of trying to “rob” his country under the guise of sanctions but claimed those measures ultimately weakened their own economies instead.

He described Russia’s position in the war as “unchanged,” saying that peace would only be possible once Ukraine accepts the “realities on the ground.” These remarks come as the conflict nears its third year, with both sides showing little willingness to compromise. Putin emphasized that the West’s financial restrictions especially moves to reallocate frozen Russian assets violated international norms and undermined trust in global financial systems.

According to the Russian leader, Europe’s attempt to profit from sanctioned funds had “failed miserably.” He pointed to rising energy prices and inflation within the bloc as proof that the sanctions hurt ordinary Europeans more than Russia. The Kremlin maintains that its economic resilience, supported by trade diversification and domestic production, shields it from Western pressure.

Western governments, meanwhile, argue that sanctions were necessary to curb Moscow’s military capabilities and pressure it into negotiations. However, Putin’s latest comments suggest that Russia is prepared for a long standoff, viewing the conflict as a test of endurance between Moscow and Western capitals. Analysts note that his rhetoric serves both domestic and geopolitical purposes, reinforcing Russia’s defiance while projecting strength abroad.
