Russia announces three days of nuclear exercises involving thousands of troops
Russia announced the start of three days of military exercises focused on nuclear readiness, involving thousands of troops across the country amid rising tensions linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the exercises are taking place from May 19 to May 21 and are designed to test the preparation and operational use of nuclear weapons in the event of an external threat or aggression.
The ministry stated that the drills include training activities related to command coordination, troop mobilization, and the handling of strategic military equipment. The announcement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension between Russia and Western countries.
The exercises also coincide with a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to China, highlighting ongoing diplomatic and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The military maneuvers follow one of the largest drone attacks launched by Ukraine against Russian territory since the beginning of the conflict. Russian authorities said the attacks came in response to recent Russian strikes on Kyiv.
Analysts believe the exercises are intended to demonstrate Russia’s military preparedness and strategic deterrence capabilities during a period of continued instability in Eastern Europe.
