Rubio says India commits to massive $500 billion US imports

Le secrétaire d’État américain Marco Rubio a effectué une visite diplomatique en Inde dans un contexte de tensions commerciales et stratégiques entre Washington et New Delhi. Il a rencontré le Premier ministre Narendra Modi ainsi que le ministre des Affaires étrangères S. Jaishankar lors d’un déplacement de quatre jours axé sur le commerce, l’énergie et la sécurité maritime. Cette mission intervient alors que les deux pays cherchent à stabiliser une relation fragilisée par les droits de douane et les divergences sur les importations indiennes de pétrole russe.

À l’issue de ses échanges avec les dirigeants indiens, Rubio a déclaré que l’Inde s’était engagée à acheter pour 500 milliards de dollars de produits américains sur une période de cinq ans. Les secteurs concernés incluent l’énergie, les technologies et l’agriculture. Ce cadre s’inscrit dans une dynamique plus large de rapprochement économique, amorcée plus tôt dans l’année avec des ajustements tarifaires entre les deux pays et des discussions sur la réduction des tensions commerciales.

La question énergétique a occupé une place centrale dans les discussions. Washington a insisté sur l’augmentation des exportations d’énergie vers l’Inde afin de réduire la dépendance de ce pays aux sources alternatives, notamment russes. Les responsables américains ont également présenté ces livraisons comme un levier de diversification de l’approvisionnement énergétique indien dans un contexte de forte demande intérieure.

Les échanges ont aussi porté sur la sécurité du détroit d’Ormuz, un point stratégique pour le transport mondial du pétrole. Les perturbations attribuées aux tensions avec l’Iran ont affecté les flux énergétiques vers l’Inde, l’un des principaux importateurs mondiaux d’hydrocarbures. Les discussions ont mis en avant la nécessité de renforcer la coopération maritime afin de garantir la stabilité des routes commerciales.

Les deux pays ont également abordé le contexte régional plus large, marqué par les relations complexes entre l’Inde, la Chine et le Pakistan, ainsi que les équilibres de sécurité dans l’océan Indien. Malgré les divergences récentes, les responsables des deux côtés ont exprimé leur volonté de poursuivre un dialogue stratégique, même si la mise en œuvre des engagements économiques reste soumise à des incertitudes politiques et commerciales.
