Heavy Russian strikes hit Kyiv amid rising tensions in Ukraine
A new wave of intense Russian missile and drone strikes targeted the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, leaving at least one person dead and several others injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Explosions were heard across the city as air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Residents reported loud blasts, shaking buildings, and anti-aircraft fire illuminating the night sky during the attack.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least 13 people were injured, with several victims hospitalized. Local officials also stated that educational facilities and residential areas suffered damage during the strikes.
The Ukrainian military described the assault as a large-scale attack involving different types of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Air raid alerts were activated throughout the country as authorities urged civilians to remain in shelters.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia could be preparing a major coordinated strike against Ukraine. He called on the population to follow safety instructions and appealed to the international community to increase pressure on Russia in order to prevent further escalation.
The attack came days after a deadly strike in the Russian-controlled region of Luhansk, where Moscow accused Ukraine of targeting educational buildings. Ukraine denied intentionally attacking civilians and said it had targeted a Russian drone unit operating in the area.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously warned of a military response following the incident. Reports also raised concerns about the possible use of advanced missile systems, including the Orechnik hypersonic missile, which Russia has showcased in recent years.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with the large-scale invasion in 2022, continues to create serious humanitarian and security challenges across the region. International observers fear that the renewed escalation could further destabilize Eastern Europe and complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war.
