Protester arrested in London after removing flag from Iranian embassy
British police confirmed Friday evening that a protester was arrested in London after climbing onto the roof of the Iranian Embassy and removing its flag during a demonstration against repression in Iran.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the individual unlawfully entered private property, scaled several balconies, and reached the roof of the embassy, where the flag was taken down. The incident occurred amid a protest held outside the diplomatic building, located near Hyde Park.
This was not the first such action in recent days. On January 10, another man briefly replaced the embassy’s flag with the Iranian flag used prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, drawing significant attention from both authorities and demonstrators.
Friday’s protest also saw clashes between demonstrators and police officers. Law enforcement officials reported that objects were thrown at officers, resulting in injuries to several members of the police force. A number of arrests were made in connection with the disturbances.
In response to growing tensions, police had previously announced the deployment of additional officers to prevent disorder and ensure the security of the embassy. Demonstrations have continued in the United Kingdom as part of a wider international movement condemning Iran’s crackdown on protests that began in late December.
