Police fatally shoot knife-wielding man in Ajaccio, Corsica
French police officers fatally shot a man armed with a knife on Saturday morning in the city of Ajaccio, on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, following a tense intervention in a public area.
According to official sources, the man was moving through the streets while holding a knife and behaving in a threatening manner. Officers followed him on foot and repeatedly attempted to bring the situation under control. A conducted energy device was first deployed in an effort to neutralize the suspect, but it proved ineffective.
As the situation escalated and the individual continued to pose a risk, one police officer opened fire. The man, reported to be 26 years old, died from his injuries shortly afterward. Authorities confirmed that no police officers or bystanders were harmed during the incident.
The shooting took place around midday in central Ajaccio. An investigation has been opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor to determine the exact circumstances of the use of force, as required in cases involving police firearms.
The incident has sparked renewed debate in France over police response protocols when confronting armed individuals in public spaces.
