Can 2025: Walid Regragui balances ambition with humility ahead of opening match
On the eve of the long-awaited Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025, Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui addressed the media to outline his team’s mindset ahead of the opening match against the Comoros. Speaking at a packed media center in Rabat, Regragui emphasized both ambition and composure as the Atlas Lions prepare to launch their continental campaign on home soil.
Hosting the tournament for the second time in its history, Morocco enters the competition as one of the main favorites. Regragui made it clear that the objective is straightforward: to compete for the title in front of Moroccan supporters. However, he stressed that success will require emotional control, consistency, and respect for every opponent.
The coach also addressed the physical condition of team captain Achraf Hakimi, whose participation in the opening match remains uncertain following a recent injury. Regragui praised Hakimi’s commitment and professionalism, highlighting his efforts to recover in time for the tournament while underlining the need to manage the squad carefully over the course of the competition.
For his part, Hakimi expressed confidence and motivation, noting that playing the Africa Cup of Nations at home represents a unique opportunity. He reiterated that the collective objective takes precedence over individual considerations.
Regragui also acknowledged the pressure that comes with Morocco’s recent footballing success, but framed it as a positive force. According to him, the national team has evolved mentally, shifting from participation to genuine title ambitions. At the same time, he called on supporters to play an active role by creating a demanding and energetic atmosphere in the stadiums.
Morocco will face the Comoros in the tournament’s opening match before continuing their group-stage campaign against Mali and Zambia, as the Atlas Lions seek to turn expectations into success.
