Taiwan president vows full investigation into deadly Taipei metro attack
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has pledged a comprehensive investigation into a deadly attack that shook Taipei’s metro system, leaving several people dead and multiple others injured. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, has raised serious concerns about public safety in a city where violent crime remains relatively rare.
According to police, the suspect, a 27-year-old man, carried out attacks at multiple locations, including metro stations near the central railway hub and a nearby shopping complex. Armed with a large knife and incendiary devices, he injured more than a dozen people before later taking his own life, authorities said.
Visiting victims in hospital, President Lai expressed condolences to the families of those killed and promised transparency. He stated that the government would conduct a thorough inquiry to establish the full circumstances of the attack and provide the public with clear and complete information.
Taipei’s mayor confirmed that the suspect was already known to authorities due to legal issues unrelated to the attack. Government officials described the incident as a deliberate act of violence, while investigators continue to examine the suspect’s background and possible motives.
