Imran Khan sentenced to 17 years in prison in Pakistan

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison by a local court, in a ruling that adds to a series of legal cases against the former leader since his removal from office in 2022.

The verdict, delivered on Saturday, also concerns Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi. Both were found guilty of abuse of trust and corruption linked to gifts received while Khan was serving as prime minister. According to the court decision, each received a 10-year sentence for breach of trust and an additional seven years for corruption-related offenses.

The case centers on luxury jewelry allegedly offered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during an official visit in 2021. Prosecutors argue that the value of the gifts was improperly declared, in violation of Pakistani regulations that require public officials to report and assess gifts received during their tenure.

Imran Khan, who has been detained since 2023, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), rejected the ruling, describing the trial as politically motivated and accusing the judiciary of lacking independence.

Family members of the former prime minister have also raised concerns over his detention conditions, claiming he is being held in isolation. Pakistani authorities have repeatedly dismissed these allegations, insisting that Khan is being treated in accordance with the law.

The latest conviction further deepens political tensions in Pakistan, where Khan remains a highly influential and divisive figure.
