Collapse of two buildings in Fez leaves 16 victims, including four children

A tragic incident struck the city of Fez on Tuesday night when two residential buildings collapsed in quick succession in the Al-Moustakbal neighborhood, part of the Massira area within the Zouggha district. According to initial information from the Health Ministry, 16 people were affected, including four children who lost their lives.

The provisional count also includes two pregnant women reported to be in stable condition, three people seriously injured, and seven others with injuries of varying severity. All victims were transported to local hospitals for urgent medical care.

The first building, a four-story structure, began to give way gradually around 11 p.m. Minutes later, a second adjacent building—also four stories high—collapsed as well. Residents described a moment of widespread panic, with uncertainty persisting about possible individuals still trapped under the debris.

Since the disaster, civil protection teams, supported by security forces and local authorities, have been conducting continuous search operations. Videos shared online show rescue workers extracting victims while shocked residents look on.

Khalid Aït Taleb, the governor of the Fez-Meknes region, visited the site alongside the city’s security chief, Oualla Ouhattit, as well as several local officials to monitor the rescue efforts in a neighborhood deeply shaken by the events.

The causes of the dual collapse remain unknown for now. The area is known for older, fragile buildings, raising concerns about structural deterioration. Authorities are expected to open an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify any potential responsibility.

The neighborhood remains tense and distressed as search operations continue.
