Morocco becomes Germany’s fourth largest supplier of mandarins

Morocco has strengthened its position in the European agri-food market by becoming the fourth largest supplier of mandarins to Germany, reflecting steady growth in citrus exports over recent years. The increase highlights the country’s expanding role in meeting European demand for fresh fruit.

During the current export season, Moroccan shipments of mandarins and clementines to Germany recorded a significant rise compared with previous years, both in volume and value. This growth allowed Morocco to overtake traditional suppliers such as Turkey and Greece, consolidating its place among Germany’s leading sources of small citrus fruits.

Morocco’s market share in German mandarin imports has increased markedly within a single season, signaling improved competitiveness, logistical performance, and product quality. At the same time, Germany has become a more important destination for Moroccan citrus, ranking among the country’s top import markets for mandarins.

Despite this progress, Spain remains Germany’s dominant supplier of small citrus fruits, accounting for the majority of imports, although Spanish volumes have shown a gradual decline in recent seasons. South Africa and Italy continue to play notable roles, while smaller shares are supplied by a range of other producing countries.

Moroccan mandarin exports typically begin in autumn, peak during the winter months, and taper off in spring. However, the current season has stood out for maintaining relatively high shipment levels later than usual, reflecting strong demand and improved export capacity.
