Trump says military conflict with Venezuela is not ruled out
US President Donald Trump has said he does not rule out the possibility of a military conflict with Venezuela, as Washington intensifies pressure on the government of President Nicolás Maduro through economic and maritime measures.
In a recent media interview, Trump stated that the Venezuelan leader “knows exactly” what Washington expects from him, without clarifying whether the United States is seeking regime change. The remarks come amid a tightening of sanctions targeting Venezuela’s oil exports, a critical source of revenue for Caracas.
Earlier this week, the US administration announced a comprehensive blockade against sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela. American authorities have also warned that additional vessels could be seized in the coming days, following the interception of a tanker carrying Venezuelan crude.
At the same time, the United States has reinforced its military presence in the Caribbean, officially to combat drug trafficking networks. US officials claim these operations are necessary to protect regional security, although the Venezuelan government has repeatedly rejected the accusations, denying any involvement in international drug trade.
Washington has also hinted at the possibility of a ground intervention, arguing that the current situation with the Venezuelan government is unacceptable. Despite diplomatic backing for Caracas from countries such as Russia, US officials have insisted that international support would not deter American actions.
