Peru launches electoral audit after disputed presidential vote
Peru’s electoral authorities have initiated a comprehensive digital audit of the first round of the presidential election following a closely contested vote and a series of logistical irregularities. The move aims to restore confidence in the electoral process and ensure the credibility of the final results.
The audit was announced by the Jury National des Élections (JNE), the country’s highest electoral body. According to officials, the review will involve independent experts, including both national and international specialists, tasked with evaluating the integrity of the voting and counting systems.
The decision comes weeks after the initial vote, which was marked by delays and operational issues that complicated the counting process. With more than 97% of ballots counted, the race for second place remains extremely tight between Roberto Sánchez and Rafael López Aliaga, separated by only a small margin of votes. Meanwhile, Keiko Fujimori secured the largest share of votes in the first round.
Thousands of disputed tally sheets are currently under review, contributing to delays in confirming the final standings. Electoral authorities have indicated that definitive results may not be available until mid-May.
The April vote also faced criticism due to logistical problems, including delays in delivering ballots and ballot boxes. In some cases, election materials were reportedly mishandled, raising further concerns among candidates and voters.
In response to these issues, Rafael López Aliaga called for a repeat vote in the capital, Lima. However, the JNE rejected this request and confirmed that the second round will proceed as scheduled.
The audit process is intended to strengthen transparency and reinforce trust in Peru’s democratic institutions. As the country prepares for the next stage of the election, authorities hope that the review will help address doubts and ensure a fair and reliable outcome.
