Morocco unveils $5 million Taza station to strengthen rail connectivity

The National Railways Office (ONCF) and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics inaugurated the new Taza railway station, a $5 million project designed to expand Morocco’s rail network and enhance regional connectivity. The development is part of a broader national effort to modernize infrastructure ahead of major international events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

A state-of-the-art transport hub

The newly built station, spanning 1,700 square meters, features a 520-square-meter reception hall, a 150-square-meter passenger area, and 260 square meters of commercial space. Its 18,300-square-meter esplanade includes a parking lot with space for over 70 vehicles.

Transport Minister Abdelssamad Kayouh and ONCF Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie led the opening ceremony, accompanied by local officials. Minister Kayouh emphasized that the station aligns with King Mohammed VI’s vision to develop modern railway hubs in emerging cities, bringing services closer to citizens.

The Taza-Fez route, one of the most frequented in the region, will see enhanced service starting September 15, with two new daily train connections. Additionally, ONCF will introduce a morning train to Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca, allowing passengers to complete round trips within a day.

The minister also announced a study nearing completion for a future Oujda-Rabat rail line and confirmed plans to deploy electric trains by 2029, promising a faster and more comfortable travel experience.

A catalyst for socio-economic growth

ONCF Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie highlighted that the Taza station is part of a nationwide initiative to rehabilitate and construct advanced railway facilities. He described the station as a “structuring project” that will spur surrounding developments, such as hotels, shops, and housing.

Officials view the station as an urban landmark that will drive socio-economic growth by easing travel, supporting local businesses, and cementing Taza’s role as a regional hub.

Preparing for global events

The Taza station is one piece of Morocco’s larger strategy to modernize its infrastructure in anticipation of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The government is investing heavily in connectivity, transport, healthcare, and urban development to meet growing demands and position Morocco as a world-class destination for global events.
