In a resounding affirmation of its human rights commitment, Morocco has secured an overwhelming majority vote for re-election to the prestigious United Nations Human Rights Committee. This achievement is a testament to the nation's growing support and trust within the international community.

At the 40th Meeting of States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in New York, Morocco's representative, Mahjoub El Haiba, garnered an impressive 120 votes out of a competitive pool of 15 candidates vying for nine vacant positions on the committee for the 2025-2028 term.

El Haiba's substantial experience in the realm of human rights has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in this triumph. A distinguished university professor, he has served as the Secretary-General of Morocco's Advisory Council for Human Rights (now the National Human Rights Council) and held the esteemed position of Morocco's first Inter-ministerial Delegate for Human Rights.

“Since his first election to the Human Rights Committee, El Haiba has endeavored to strengthen the working methods of this important conventional body,” noting that the re-election reflects Morocco’s growing capital of support and trust in the international community.

The Human Rights Committee, comprising 18 esteemed experts elected by States Parties, bears the crucial responsibility of monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Its mandate includes reviewing reports from States Parties on the Covenant's implementation, preparing comprehensive assessments on obligations, and examining communications related to violations of this pivotal instrument.

Morocco's resounding success in securing re-election to the UN Human Rights Committee is a testament to its unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and its growing influence on the global stage. As the nation continues to champion human rights principles, this achievement heralds a new era of even greater engagement and leadership in the international arena.
