Morocco leads African retirement destinations with affordable living and streamlined visas
Morocco shines in global retirement rankings
Morocco has been ranked among the world’s top retirement destinations, securing 24th place out of 44 countries in the 2025 Global Retirement Report by Global Citizen Solutions. The North African nation also stands out as one of the top five retirement destinations in Africa, surpassing countries like Cape Verde, South Africa, Zambia, and Namibia.
The report, which assesses factors such as quality of life, economic viability, and ease of integration, awarded Morocco an overall score of 81.51 points.
Simplified entry procedures attract retirees
One of Morocco’s key advantages is its straightforward retirement visa process, with approvals taking approximately two months. Applicants need only provide proof of a monthly income of $1,000 to qualify. The visa also extends to spouses and minor children, making Morocco an appealing option for retirees seeking to relocate with their families.
Additionally, Morocco offers a pathway to citizenship after five years of residence, though dual nationality may be subject to certain restrictions. This timeline provides retirees with long-term security while enjoying their new lifestyle.
High scores in economics and quality of life
Morocco ranked 7th globally for economic factors, 16th for quality of life, and 24th for integration. These rankings highlight the country’s affordability, favorable tax policies, and ability to provide a comfortable lifestyle for retirees.
While Morocco lags in categories like international mobility—ranking 37th out of 44 countries—the country compensates with its welcoming atmosphere and robust retirement infrastructure.
Challenges with citizenship
The report also highlighted limitations in Morocco’s citizenship policies for retirees, noting that access to full citizenship rights remains restricted. These challenges align with trends seen in other countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, where strict residency and administrative requirements can deter some potential retirees.
Despite these hurdles, Morocco continues to attract retirees worldwide, offering a blend of affordability, cultural richness, and streamlined procedures that make it one of the most appealing destinations for those seeking a fresh start abroad.
