Israir Suspends Marrakech Flight Bookings Amid New Aviation Security Rules
Israeli airline Israir has suspended ticket sales for its Marrakech route and put plans to increase flight frequencies on hold following the introduction of stricter aviation security requirements in Israel, according to Israeli media reports.
The decision comes in the wake of a security incident involving a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, prompting Israeli authorities to review procedures governing airlines operating services to the country. The duration of Israir’s suspension remains uncertain, with the airline awaiting further clarification from the relevant authorities.
According to The Times of Israel, Israir will not resume ticket sales until the updated security requirements have been clarified. The company has not announced a date for reopening bookings, while Israeli media reported that October 20 was expected to mark the last scheduled flight on the route.
Flight expansion plans put on hold
The suspension interrupts Israir’s plans to strengthen its presence in the Moroccan tourism market. The airline had intended to increase its Marrakech services to three flights per week from November, up from the single weekly service introduced when the route resumed in September 2026.
The expansion also involved negotiations to lease an additional aircraft. Both the increased frequency and the aircraft arrangement have now been put on hold pending clarification of the new rules.
Israir has indicated that it will comply with the applicable security instructions and maintain safety standards for passengers and crew. However, the airline has not identified any specific security threat related to Morocco or the Marrakech destination.
Flydubai incident triggers tighter scrutiny
The new restrictions follow an incident aboard a Flydubai service travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv in late September. Reuters reported that the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot attacked the captain, with passengers helping to restrain him.
The episode prompted Israeli authorities to reassess aviation security procedures and introduce additional requirements affecting foreign airline crews and aircraft operating flights to Israel.
The resulting measures have created uncertainty for carriers serving Israeli destinations, although the available information does not establish whether other airlines operating between Israel and Morocco will face comparable disruptions.
For Israir, the immediate issue is the clarification of the new requirements and the conditions under which ticket sales and the planned expansion can resume.
Morocco-Israel air links face renewed uncertainty
The suspension comes as direct air connections between Morocco and Israel have been gradually recovering after major disruptions following October 7, 2023.
Israir resumed its Marrakech service in September 2026, while rival carrier Arkia returned to the route in August. El Al, through its Sun d’Or subsidiary, also announced plans to resume flights from November 16, subject to the necessary approvals.
These developments followed a period of reduced direct air connectivity between the two countries, which established diplomatic relations in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords.
The gradual restoration of flights has been important for tourism and travel between the two markets. Any prolonged interruption could complicate capacity planning for airlines and affect travellers seeking direct connections between Israel and Marrakech.
Nevertheless, the broader impact remains unclear. No confirmed timetable has been announced for Israir’s return to ticket sales, and it is not yet known whether the revised security requirements will alter the schedules of other carriers serving the route.
For now, the future of Israir’s planned expansion depends on the clarification of Israel’s aviation security rules and the airline’s ability to meet the resulting requirements.
