Madrid Public Education Protests Leave Five Arrested and Two Police Officers Injured
Five people have been arrested following clashes between protesters and riot police during a demonstration in support of public education at Complutense University of Madrid on Wednesday morning. Two police officers reportedly sustained minor injuries during the confrontation, as tensions escalated on campus amid a wider strike across the region’s education system.
The arrests were made on suspicion of assaulting law enforcement officers, according to police sources cited by Europa Press. Authorities have not ruled out adding a public disorder charge as the investigation progresses.
The demonstration brought together members of the university community and education advocates demanding stronger support for public education. Police deployed riot-control units and carried out several charges against groups gathered on campus.
Conflicting accounts of the police intervention
The events have prompted sharply contrasting accounts of the morning’s confrontation. While police sources reported minor injuries among two officers, education organizations criticized the security operation and alleged that demonstrators were also injured during the clashes.
The UCM for Public Education platform accused Madrid’s government delegate, Francisco Martín, of responsibility for the police deployment. The organization claimed that officers had restricted access for strike pickets before using force against protesters.
In a statement, the platform described the intervention as indiscriminate and excessive, raising concerns among education activists about the handling of demonstrations within the university grounds.
Videos circulated on social media appeared to show police units charging at a group of demonstrators gathered outside the Faculty of Chemical Sciences. Participants were carrying red flags and a banner bearing the words “Public University.”
The available accounts reflect competing interpretations of the confrontation, with police sources and education organizations reporting different aspects of the incident.
Strike begins with overnight occupation and traffic disruption
The clashes took place as Madrid’s public education strike got underway, following an overnight occupation at the Faculty of Information Sciences at Complutense University.
The mobilization also briefly disrupted traffic on Paseo de la Castellana during the morning rush hour, bringing the protest beyond the university campus and into one of the capital’s major traffic corridors.
The strike involved education workers and supporters at several institutions across the Community of Madrid, indicating a broader mobilization beyond the events at Complutense.
Union pickets reported across the Madrid region
The trade union Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) reported the presence of strike pickets at multiple schools and secondary education centres across the region.
Among the institutions concerned were IES Satafi in Getafe; IES Pío Baroja in Leganés; IES Nicolás Copernico and CEIP José Hierro in Parla; and CEIP Pinocho in Torrejón de Ardoz.
Additional pickets were reported at IES Cervantes and IES Iturralde in Madrid’s Arganzuela district, as well as at Palomeras-Vallecas in the capital.
The geographically dispersed actions highlighted the scale of the education-sector mobilization, which combined workplace demonstrations with campus gatherings and a temporary traffic disruption.
Pressure mounts over the handling of demonstrations
The arrests and reports of injuries have added a security dimension to the ongoing public education dispute in Madrid. The incident has also intensified criticism from organizations that question the police response to the demonstration.
However, the allegations of excessive force and reports of injuries among protesters remain attributed to the organizations involved, while police sources have confirmed minor injuries to two officers.
As the strike continues to draw attention to public education, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation at Complutense University are likely to remain a point of contention between demonstrators and the authorities.
