US jobless claims edge up slightly to 199,000
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, increasing by 1,000 to 199,000, according to data released by the US Department of Labor on Thursday. The figure, adjusted for seasonal variations, covers the week ending October 10, 2026.
Despite the modest increase, initial jobless claims remained below the 200,000 threshold for the fifth consecutive week. The latest reading suggests that layoffs continue to be limited, although hiring activity has also shown signs of slowing.
Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected new claims to reach 200,000. The actual figure therefore came in slightly below forecasts, indicating that the number of workers newly seeking unemployment assistance remained relatively low.
Initial jobless claims are closely watched as an indicator of changes in the US labor market. A sustained increase can signal that employers are cutting jobs more aggressively, while low figures may indicate that businesses are generally holding on to their existing workforce.
However, the latest data alone does not provide a complete picture of employment conditions. A labor market can experience limited layoffs while also seeing fewer new hires, making it more difficult for job seekers to find work. Economists therefore assess unemployment claims alongside indicators such as payroll growth, the unemployment rate, job vacancies and wage trends.
The latest figures point to continued resilience in one aspect of the US labor market, but the combination of subdued hiring and low levels of layoffs suggests a more cautious employment environment. Future reports will help determine whether this pattern persists and how it affects workers and the broader US economy.
