Morocco Emerges as Top Holiday Destination for Spanish Families
Morocco has become the top holiday destination for Spanish families, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by travel platform Evaneos. The survey highlights Morocco’s appeal as a safe, family-friendly destination just over an hour’s flight away from Spain, surpassing other popular locations like Egypt, Costa Rica, and Thailand. Known for its unique blend of traditional charm and modern conveniences, Morocco has captivated Spanish families looking for both adventure and relaxation.
Dimension Turistica, a leading Spanish travel magazine, describes Morocco as "the gateway to Africa." The magazine emphasizes the ease of access and the diverse experiences that the country offers. Families visiting Morocco are particularly drawn to cities like Marrakech, where the bustling streets, vibrant markets, and the enticing scents of local cuisine create an unforgettable atmosphere. The majestic views of the Sahara Desert also make Morocco an ideal destination for family exploration.
The magazine suggests a variety of activities that families can enjoy, such as camel rides at sunset, hikes through the Atlas Mountains, and immersive cultural experiences like Moroccan cooking classes. These experiences not only offer fun but also provide opportunities to learn about the country’s rich heritage.
In addition to the activities, parents appreciate the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people, making it easier to travel with children. "One of the aspects that particularly attracts parents is the warmth of the people," noted Dimension Turistica. This welcoming nature, combined with the country’s family-friendly environment, makes Morocco an increasingly popular choice for vacationing families.
Morocco’s tourism sector has seen remarkable growth, particularly from Spanish tourists. By the end of November 2023, Morocco welcomed 2.8 million Spanish visitors, an increase of nearly 40% compared to the previous year. Spanish nationals made up almost 30% of all tourists to Morocco, further solidifying the country’s position as a prime holiday destination for Spanish families.
The overall tourism numbers for Morocco have also surged. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country recorded 15.9 million tourist arrivals by November 2024, representing a 20% increase from the same period in 2023. Additionally, visits by Moroccans living abroad grew by 17%, adding 1.1 million tourists. The growth in November alone was substantial, with 1.3 million visitors marking a 31% rise from the previous year.
Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor celebrated these achievements, noting that the numbers reflect Morocco's growing reputation as one of the top global destinations. In a statement shared on LinkedIn, Ammor expressed excitement about reaching this historic milestone and shared her optimism for Morocco’s continued tourism growth.
