Morocco Challenges EU Court Ruling on Agricultural and Fisheries Agreements

In a bold stance, Morocco has declared its non-recognition of the recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling concerning agricultural and fisheries agreements between Morocco and the European Union. The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates issued a statement emphasizing that the Kingdom had no involvement in any stage of the legal proceedings.

"Morocco is not a party to this case, which concerns the European Union on one side and the Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, on the other," the ministry clarified. "As Morocco did not participate in any phase of this procedure, it does not consider itself affected by the decision in any way."

The ministry's statement went further, criticizing the court's judgment: "The content of this decision contains obvious legal missteps and suspicious factual errors. This indicates, at best, a complete lack of understanding of the realities of the case, if not blatant political bias."

In a particularly pointed critique, the ministry accused the ECJ of overstepping its bounds: "The Court even allowed itself to substitute for the competent UN bodies and contradict their well-established positions and approaches. Notably, the British High Court, in a nearly identical case, demonstrated more discernment, impartiality, and legal mastery."

Morocco is now calling for action from EU institutions. "Morocco demands that the Council, the European Commission, and EU member states take necessary measures to respect their international commitments, preserve the achievements of the partnership, and provide the Kingdom with the legal security to which it is legitimately entitled as an EU partner on several strategic issues," the statement asserted.

The ministry concluded by reaffirming Morocco's unwavering position: "Morocco reiterates its constant stance of not subscribing to any agreement or legal instrument that does not respect its territorial integrity and national unity."
